Buhari govt takes fresh steps on enrolment

The Federal Government has approved the establishment of Sim swap centres by Mobile Network Operators, MNOs, across the local government areas of the country.

The approval was disclosed during a meeting of the ministerial Task Force on the NIN-SIM registration chaired by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami.

During the meeting, the federal government also approved the extension of the tenure of National Identity Number, NIN, enrolment Agent Licenses for MNOs from 1 to 5 years.

A statement jointly signed by Ikechukwu Adinde, Kayode Adegoke, Director, Public Affairs Head, Corporate Communications, Nigerian Communications Commission and Nigeria Identify Management Commission, respectively, said the steps were to simplify the enrolment process for agents of NIN.

The statement reads partly: “A number of resolutions were taken at the meeting, including the following: Approval was given to MNOs for the establishment of dedicated SIM Swap Centres across the Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria.

“Approval was given for the extension of the tenure of NIN Enrolment Agent Licenses for MNOs from 1 to 5 years in consideration of their satisfactory performance, subject to continuous monitoring.

“This is a deliberate effort of the Federal Government to simplify the enrolment process for Nigerians and legal residents.

“The Technical Committee was mandated to complete the development of a new SIM issuance strategy that cannot be compromised. This will ensure that there is no repeat of the past process that was compromised through pre-registration by some agents.

“A Multi-Sectoral Adhoc Committee was tasked to immediately complete the review of the processes for new SIM activations for legal residents staying in Nigeria for less than 24 months. The membership of the Committee was drawn from NCC, NIMC, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON).

“Furthermore, MNOs that already have Service Centres in important and critical locations in LGAs, are expected to upgrade these Centres to a level where they can qualify as SIM Swap Centres in order to reduce the challenges associated with the SIM Swap/Replacement process for the citizens.

“The purpose is to bring SIM Swap Centres closer to Nigerians regardless of their location.”

IGP, Adamu decries negative effect of drugs, cultism on society

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu has lamented the devastating effect of drug and cultism in society, saying they are the twin causes of insecurity in the country.

The IG Adamu made the assertions at a stakeholders forum convened by the Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano with security heads and leaders of various communities in the state.

Adamu who was represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of finance and administration, DIG Joseph Egbunike, charged his men to do all that they can to ensure that they nip drug abuse in the bud.

He said, “Drug and cultism are the greatest challenges we have in Nigeria today. When they take all these things (drugs), they do not know the value of life any longer. That is the problem we have, but it is the responsibility of everybody to ensure that this stops.

“If you leave drug to fester in your division, there are chances that you may be a victim of it. You must work to bring down the use of drugs in your areas. There must be synergy with NDLEA to ensure that this is brought down. You must work hard and let those who can change be changed.

“Security is everyone’s business. Don’t rest because if you sleep, what happened in Sokoto may start happening here. Certain things should not be allowed to happen in Anambra. Peace is the only vehicle for any development. There is no alternative to it.

“The IG has directed me to commend the enormous contributions of the governor to security agencies. All your efforts in peacebuilding and development are worthy of emulation. We ask you to keep strategizing and restrategizing because we will overcome someday.”

In his response, Governor Obiano charged leaders in various communities to bring their youths into leadership in a bid to curb the use of drugs.

“During the End SARS, the security people were demoralized, and could not even move around with their uniforms, but the youth stepped in to do their work. That is what we want it to be. Security is the duty of everyone, even though the government has the duty of security of lives and property.

“Bring the youth into the picture. In my town, it is the youth that made a law to stop the sale of drugs, and today there are no drugs in the town. The Youths are the people who know where they are sold and who the consumers are. We have to bring them into
